Our Book
We’re committed to promoting Italian culture, but we also couldn’t resist exploring the footprint of our ancestors in the US.
The book Italians in the Lowcountry, by historian Christina Rae Butler, utilizes historic documentation, images and interviews to add to the important and diverse stories and experiences of Charleston’s Italians and Italian-Americans to the city’s historical narrative.
It chronicles the Italian experience from the Colonial Era to the present, with biographical sketches of noteworthy Italian Charlestonians.
It also discusses Italian ethnic communities and businesses throughout the city’s history and the contributions that they and the current Italian community have made to the greater Charleston metropolis.
A preface from Cristiano Musillo, Consul General of Italy in Miami, and a section on the Spoleto Festival featuring interviews from former Mayor Joseph P. Riley and General Director Nigel Redden, highlight the important cultural contributions that continue today.
Also, please find here an adaptation of the presentation made by Eugene Massamillo at the prestigious Charleston Library Society by way of introduction to Christina’s discussion about her book in May 2021.
