Italy as seen through the lens of Magnum Photos
After World War II, Italy became one of the most important European markets for the expansion of the agency, and one of the most vibrant and attractive cultural centers for illustrated magazines. The Italian monumental heritage, the history and tradition of the South, the charm of the Vatican, the cinematic dreams of Cinecittà – the so-called “Hollywood on the Tiber” – with its stars and American productions, the emergence of an Italian style in fashion and design: no subject seems to have escaped the camera of the many photographers who visited Italy in the post-war period: not only the founders like Capa, Rodger, Seymour and Cartier-Bresson, but also Magnum Photos members such as Werner Bischof, Ernst Haas, Wayne Miller, Inge Morath, Eve Arnold, Elliott Erwitt, Bruce Davidson, Burt Glinn, Marc Riboud, and many others.
* Università di Napoli was established in 1224 and named after its founder, Federico II. It is the oldest public and state-funded university in Italy and in the world, and one of the world’s ten oldest universities in continuous operation. The founder, also known as Frederick II, was Holy Roman Emperor from his coronation in 1220 until his death in 1250, a reign of approximately 30 years, though he held other titles like King of Sicily (from 1197) and German King (from 1212) throughout much of this period.
