A unique journey from the Alps to the Vatican

November 19, 2026 – We are delighted to introduce Mario Enzler for what promises to be a fascinating talk about one of the world’s oldest and most storied military corps: the Pontifical Swiss Guard at the Vatican in Rome.
Born and raised in Sotto il Monte, a small town in the foothills of the Italian Alps near Bergamo where also St Pope John XXIII (1958-1963) comes from, Mario’s early life was steeped in the culture and traditions of Northern Italy. His first calling was music, which he pursued through formal studies in Milan and Verona. But his path soon took an unexpected and remarkable turn when he became a Swiss Guard.

During his service under Pope John Paul II, Mario held the unique dual role of both soldier and conductor of the Swiss Guard Band. While many of us recognize the Swiss Guard by their distinctive uniforms, Mario will bring to life the deeper story behind this elite corps—their origins, their mission, and their daily responsibilities at the heart of the Vatican. Even more compelling are his firsthand experiences: he will share personal encounters not only with two Popes, but also with prominent global figures who came to Rome for papal audiences, including Ronald Reagan.

Following his years at the Vatican, Mario embarked on an entirely different chapter, building a nearly two-decade career in investment banking and wealth management. Eventually relocating to the United States, he and his wife took on a new mission: founding a Classical K–12 Academy rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition. His commitment to education has continued through teaching roles at The Catholic University of America and University of St. Thomas.
Mario currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the President at The Heritage Foundation, where he continues to bring a distinctive blend of international experience, leadership, and faith-based perspective to his work, especially integrating Catholic Social Teaching in policy making.

Please join us in welcoming Mario Enzler—a man whose journey from the Alps to the Vatican, from finance to education to policy making offers not only a remarkable story, but also a rare window into history, service, and vocation.
